Last year, we were able to raise over $1,700 for direct aid. We are continuing our fundraising efforts in this new Gregorian year and all ticket sales from this workshop will go to Khalil and his family.
“I wonder why sometimes we congregate with those who have been hurt in ways that look similar to how we have been hurt. About how we sometimes (me too) name identities and even whole organizations based on our scars. And how sometimes those of us with similar vulnerabilities are the ones who scar each other. I wonder sometimes about what keeps us close, in a hurting world shaped by intimate violence. In a world that cuts systemically and deep.”
– Alexis Pauline Gumbs, Undrowned: Black Feminist Lessons from Marine Mammals
The prompts, activities, and reflection questions of this workshop will draw from parshas Bereshit through Vayechi, Undrowned, and assorted media with the following centralized themes: connection-based boundaries + creative praxis (bereshit), the impacts of colonialism on senesence and death care (lech lecha, chayei sara, and vayechi), dreams as portals + the concept of home (vayetzei and vayeshev), care networks in response to manufactured disaster (noach), belonging (vayera and toldot), distributive justice + structural inequity (vayishlach and miketz). No previous knowledge of these texts is required to participate!
Participants are not required to have their mics or cameras on, presence is enough. Presence is participation. However, discussion, questions, and the sharing of writing is encouraged. Please come prepared with writing materials, art supplies, a blank document to type in, and/or an imaginative mind to reflect on the guided prompts, activities, and reflection questions. The workshop will be organized by theme and begin with a brief, guided breathwork session.
